Description: This is the Bodhisattva Kannon, goddess of mercy in the Japanese Buddhist pantheon. Bodhisattvas are beings who are at the point of escaping the cycle of eternal rebirths but who, with true compassion, refrain from entering nirvana until all sentient beings are enlightened. This design may be compared with that of Daruma; he and Kannon represent two extremes of Buddhism in Japan.
