Tsuki no Monogatari

Artist: Yoshitoshi (100 Phases)
Date: 1889

Description: The long letter in this design has been unrolled and reread so often that it is in tatters. The lady’s grief at hearing the news of her lover's death is conveyed by her loosened hair and bare feet and by the mysterious ascent of the letter into the sky, as it spirals towards a crescent moon that appears from behind a cloud. This tiny sliver, for which one has to search, adds to the sense of unreality of the design.
Series: 100 Phases of the Moon
