The entry in Hasui's diary for this scene reads as follows:
Matsushima is seen here through the pine trees covering the small knoll on Katsura island. It is midsummer; the islands stand out in the afternoon light, a cool wind gently blows. I thought the two women, who had come to rake up the fallen leaves, fitted well into the composition and were ideal for this scene.
